Pokemon TCG Card Grading — PSA, CGC, and Beckett Explained

Card grading is the process of submitting a trading card to a third-party authentication company (PSA, CGC, BGS/Beckett) to be inspected, graded on a 1-10 scale, and sealed in a tamper-evident plastic case ('slab'). The grade dramatically affects the card's market value — a Pokemon Charizard worth $300 raw might fetch $1,500 in a PSA 9 and $15,000+ in a PSA 10.

What's the difference between PSA, CGC, and Beckett (BGS)?

PSA: dominant market share for vintage and Pokemon, simple 1-10 grade scale, generally pulls the highest resale prices. CGC: launched TCG grading 2021, sub-grades for centering/corners/edges/surface, faster turnaround. BGS: known for strict grading and prestigious 'Black Label' (10 on every sub-grade), strongest in modern sports cards. For Pokemon, PSA dominates.

What does PSA 10 mean?

PSA 10 (Gem Mint) is PSA's top grade — perfect or near-perfect on centering, corners, edges, and surface. Roughly 5-15% of submissions hit a PSA 10 on average; for popular modern Pokemon cards the rate is often lower because everyone hand-picks their submissions. PSA 10 is the level where six- and seven-figure sales happen on chase cards.

How much does grading cost?

PSA economy tier: roughly $20-25 per card, 30-60 day turnaround. Express tiers run $75-300+ per card with 5-15 day turnarounds. Bulk tiers exist if you submit 20+ cards under a declared value. CGC and BGS have similar pricing structures. Add postage both ways and insurance for valuable cards.

Should I grade my Pokemon cards?

Only if the raw value plus the expected grade lift exceeds the grading fee plus shipping. Rule of thumb: if a raw card is worth less than $50 and unlikely to hit PSA 10, the math doesn't work. Modern Charizard, Moonbreon, and chase rares from Evolving Skies / Crown Zenith are the most consistent PSA 10 wins. Always research the comp prices on PSA Pop and eBay sold listings first.
